Travellers with special needsAny questions?

Can I carry an oxygen concentrator (CPAP), apnoea breathing device or similar on board?And dialysis equipment?


CPAPs, oxygen concentrators and similar breathing devices are permitted so long as they are under the supervision of the Iberia medical service. Please contact the telephone helpline Serviberia or any > Iberia office before you fly. Remember there are no sockets on board, so the device must be fitted with dry batteries. For safety reasons, these devices may have to be disconnected during the trip, so they will only be accepted when disconnection does not interfere with the passenger's health.

Dialysis equipment can travel free without forming part of any excess allowed on your ticket, with a weight limit of 50 kg, and all medical supplies for dialysis doses covering two days.
Acceptance of embarkation does not require authorisation, provided their use in fight is not necessary. Otherwise, contact SERVIBERIA to ask for medical authorisation.

We recommend you pack the equipment correctly to prevent damage to it in handling.

Large passengers


For their comfort during the flight, Iberia allows an extra seat to be acquired. The Extra Seat always refers to the one alongside. Iberia never guarantees or books the seat in front.
This may be requested by contacting our service centre to purchase the plane ticket and an extra seat at the same price.

If you book through your travel agency and have not yet begun the trip, please contact them.

How can I request a special service for passengers who have an illness or have reduced mobility?


Travellers with special needs are the individuals who have an illness, whether recent or chronic, who are pregnant or are recent mothers, and other cases where special help is needed when travelling (wheel chairs, stretchers, etc.).

General regulations recommend persons who have the following recent or chronic illnesses to consult their doctor before travelling:

  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Chronic respiratory problems
  • Severe anaemia
  • Unstable diabetes or cancer
  • If the person is taking immunosuppressant medications
  • Or if their condition to travel is in question for any reason

In some cases, these must be treated as a medical case, with authorisation needed from the Medical Service to be able to fly:

  • Need for oxygen to be supplied
  • Use of a stretcher due to inability to travel while seated
  • Use of an independent incubator in cases of premature babies
  • Inability to understand and carry out instructions
  • Patients with acute or chronic illnesses, or who are convalescing from surgical operations for whom their transport could cause aggravation or death due to their characteristics at the time of the flight.

Persons with Reduced Mobility are those with physical incapacity (sensory or locomotory), diminished intellectual faculties, an age, illness or any other cause of disability, who use a means of transport and whose situation needs special attention and requires adapting the services available to all passengers to the needs of that individual.

In Iberia, with the collaboration of the Airport Management of each country, we have revised processes to facilitate your travels and we work daily on designing more accessible airplanes and specific procedures to each need. With great pleasure, we are constantly learning in order to offer you the safe and comfortable journey that you deserve.

Wheelchairs & mobility aids


Passengers with reduced mobility can take two additional pieces of mobility equipment (wheelchairs, walking frames/orthopaedic aids) at no additional cost.

If the electric wheelchair is activated by a dry-cell battery, the terminals should be insulated and the accumulator disconnected and fastened to the chair. For wheelchairs activated by wet-cell batteries, they should be able to be unloaded, stowed, secured, and unloaded, always in a vertical position, with the accumulator disconnected and secured to the wheelchair and the terminals insulated.

Mechanically driven wheelchairs will be considered as part of the passenger's personal belongings or items and will therefore not be subject to charges for excess luggage.

Can I take my medication along as hand luggage?


For your own good, Iberia recommends that you always keep all your medication in your hand luggage and easily accessible.

For passengers whose illness requires treatment with injectable medication (diabetics, etc.), a Medical Certificate will be required for carrying the syringes, needles and medication required on board.

Please remember that due to the fact that airport Security Services are outside our control, you should have a contingency plan prepared with your doctors in case the competent authorities do not allow you to board the aircraft with such items.

What is a FREMEC card and how can I apply for one?


The medical card for frequent passengers (Frequent Traveller Medical Card), represents temporary medical authorization for the passenger travelling with Iberia or any other airline. Please remember that this card is issued exclusively by the Medical Services of airlines associated with IATA, at the passenger's request and on the basis of a report from this Medical Service.

Although the FREMEC card may be used as a substitute for medical reports and authorizations, if you require special care, please note that the reports and authorizations must be completed by the Medical Service of the airline carrier.

Can I fly with a plaster cast?


In line with different international medical protocols and recommendations, you are not allowed to fly if you have had a plaster cast fitted less than 24 hours before the departure of your flight.
After that time you will be able to proceed with your normal routine and fly with us to any of our destinations assured of the safety you deserve.
You may change your booking free of charge during the seven days following the departure of your flight, either through our Booking Centre[Opens in new window] or through your travel agency. Remember, you must send/present a document to prove that you have been fitted with a plaster cast (medical certificate, accident and emergency report, etc.)

How do I travel with a guide or an emotional support dog?


It is a dog which has been specially trained to be the eyes, voice and ears of its master. Due to these circumstances, except in a few rare cases, it does not need to be subject to the same requirements as other pets.

Guide dogs travel in the cabin in accordance with the airline and national import regulations, as long as they are accompanying passengers who depend on them for guidance, at no extra charge. Deaf passengers will require a medical certificate attesting to their condition.

Iberia only accepts therapy or emotional support dogs in the case of passengers whose final destination is the United States. This service is guaranteed for flights operated and booked with an Iberia code.

Persons with Reduced Mobility will not be charged for transporting basic items which facilitate their mobilityor other auxiliary essential items in the case of disability.

Regulations with regard to acceptance, documentation, waiver on the part of Iberia, type of cage or pet pack (if travelling in the hold) will be the same as for other pets.

If you want to travel to the United Kingdom with your guide dog or service animal, you have to go through a series of procedures established by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs "DEFRA" to avoid the country's compulsory six months' quarantine on pets.

What is the INCAD form?


INCAD (Incapacitated Passengers Handling Advice) is a document that the ticket sales offices, agencies, etc. must fill in when they sell a ticket to an incapacitated passenger who needs complementary means such as a stretcher or oxygen, ambulance at origin or destination… or whose health could be affected during the flight, seriously affect the other passengers, or put the security of the flight at risk.

This document contains relevant information of the passenger conditions and this is the document that the Iberia Medical Service uses to issue the authorisation to fly the passenger, indicating the necessary requisites (if a companion is necessary, if it must be a healthcare professional, etc.)
