The medieval castle of Santa Bárbara is placed on the Benacantil Mount, 166 m above the city and was built in the 11th century, when Alicante lived under Muslim domination. However, the fortress that can be visited nowadays was mostly built in the 17th century onwards, after surviving the constant attack of enemy artillery. When visiting the castle, you can choose between the normal or the dramatised tour (admision five euros), which includes characters in period costume who explain the defensive evolution of the walled area and the life of its inhabitants. As well as this, the inside of the castle houses the Museo de la Ciudad de Alicante (MUSA), opened in 2011, which describes -using multimedia technology- the origin of the city through its archaeological remains, stables in caves, water well, torture room and lookout posts watching over the Mediterranean, and their influence on the evolution of Alicante.
