Near the town of Cangas de Onís, and about 90 minutes' drive from Oviedo, this lovely, leafy mountain spot is home to a majestic church and an atmospheric cave grotto shrine to "La Santina," the Virgin of Covadonga, to mark the place where King Pelayo and his forces defeated the Moors and started reversing their conquest of the Iberian peninsula in 722. If you have time, continue a bit farther along into the foothills of the Picos de Europa to enjoy the stupendous views offered by the Covadonga Lakes. At the height of summer you might want to consider taking a public bus out here, as parking is limited.
