Catalonian cava is a sparkling wine, originating in the Alt Penedes zone, around 40 kilometres from Barcelona. In this area is a town called Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, where a group of seven noblemen, with a shared interest in the process of champagne and wine making, got together at the end of the 19th century. From their meetings, they decided to put their technique to good use and started making champagne in this area. The first 72 crates of Catalonian cava were sold to the public in 1879. This was the Catalonian cava’s starting point. From then on, it was thought to be a drink of the noble people, and became fashionable in the upper echelons of society. It was therefore in high demand, and has remained popular ever since, competing with the best French champagne. There is a large variety of cava, which can be paired with all different types of food, including meat and fish, due to their varying sugar content. The Gothic Quarter is filled with cava houses and bars, ideal for sampling this delicious Barcelona speciality.
