Bordeaux' oldest and largest food market traces its origins back to 1749, when cattle was sold once a week on this spot, gradually expanding to include produce and products such as shoes and clothing. In 1891 the market was enclosed with a glass and tin roofed structure, but unlike other historic European markets, here subsequent renovations (the most recent in 1999) have left none of this historic architecture. Nonetheless, the market has made something of a comeback in recent years and remains an icon of local commerce. It's open Tuesday through Sunday.
