It leaves many observers speechless - even in tears. Located on a stretch of the Danube, just south of the Hungarian parliament building, this memorial was constructed in 2005. It consists of 60 iron shoes at the spot where, between December 1944 and the end of January 1945, 20,000 Jews were lined up and shot, and then dumped into the river (a common practice which took the lives of thousands who had not already been deported to the Nazi death camps). There is always a stream of visitors to this emotional memorial who come to reflect, pray and perhaps leave a flower or light a candle. Incredibly moving.
