Cloud Gate

The essential photo of Chicago.

If you love original photos make sure to take a picture of your reflection in this sculpture created by Anish Kapoor. Cloud Gate is located in Millennium Park and although it is impossible to pose in front of it without other people around, the contrast between the city’s skyline and the blue sky is worth it. Made of stainless steel and weighing 110 tons, it is popularly called The Bean because of its bean-like appearance. It is inspired by liquid mercury and constructed of polished mirror-like sheets. Cloud Gate was placed in AT&T Plaza for the opening of the Millennium Park in 2004, although it was only finished in May 2006 because it ended up being larger than expected. The initial cost was estimated at six million dollars but the final cost was 23 million and it was financed exclusively by donations from individuals and companies. It is huge and has a lower arch where it is not unusual to find people lying down taking distorted photographs of themselves.
