"We are what we eat" is the familiar phrase which captures the philosophy behind this outdoor market, established in 2005 in the town of Hoyo del Manzanares in the Guadarrama Mountains. Nowadays this popular market is held on the second Sunday of each month, 11AM to 2.30PM, in the town's Plaza Mayor (main square). You'll find all manner of fresh, organically-grown local produce, free-range chicken eggs, honey, yogurt, and much more. Also on hand are plenty of other certified organic foodstuffs from other parts of the region and beyond, as well as a variety of crafts fashioned from wood and clay; natural soaps; handmade clothing, and so forth. In fact, markets like these have in recent years been instrumental in helping to preserve traditional crafts. It's also a great opportunity to rub shoulders with the locals, see how some of the products are made, and maybe even practise your Spanish with the non-English-speakers here. In short, a totally charming outing suitable for the whole family.
