The country's first tavern has reinvented itself splendidly.

Right in the heart of old Santo Domingo, right across from the Alcázar de Colón, this historic spot was originally the island’s first tavern, so it has witnessed the long march of Dominican history and seen many of its well known personages pass through here. Today, Pat’e Palo’s ancient stone walls and maritime décor are the perfect backdrop for the nouvelle-creole creations of one of the DR’s top chefs, Venezuela-born Saverio Stassi, bringing a modern touch and international fusion influences to traditional dishes. You have the option of dining outside on the plaza (it’s a great place to watch the sun set) or in interior spaces that feel intensely historic. Reservations recommended.
