On Plaza de Santa María, Jaén's Assumption of the Virgin Cathedral is not surprisingly one of the city's most iconic buildings. Begun in 1249 and consecrated in 1724, it's a splendid example of pure Spanish Renaissance, with a graceful, soaring façade reminiscent of a retable. The interior features thick columns supporting a high cupola, as well as myriad chapels and extraordinary religious art. Highlights include the sacristy, the choir seats, the high chapel, and the cathedral museum, home to a wealth of sculptures, paintings, gold and silver items, and manuscripts.
