Sierra Mágina Natural Park

A small nature reserve near Jaén

Just over a half hour's drive from Jaén, the Sierra Mágina Natural Park is a wonderful place to enjoy the fresh air and great outdoors, shown off to marvelous effect in this area. If you're a climber, the province's highest peak (2,167 metres/7,109 feet) offers a nice challenge and magnificent views. The park isn't huge (19,900 hectares/77 square miles), but it's packed with options, including hiking and biking trails which will take you up to, for example, the Zurreón Waterfall or the Cánava Pine Barren, so spectacular it's been declared a National Monument. If you take the Gibralberca trail, you'll see how the landscape changes as you go farther uphill, from immense olive trees to forests higher up, and finally near the peak, juniper-like savin bushes, pines, and hawthorn.
