An overlook, cultural centre & restaurant also designed by the inimitable César Manrique

Mirador del Río Overlook

From guns to avant-garde

Another popular attraction designed by iconic 20th-century Lanzarote artist/architect César Manrique, this overlook was built in 1974 near the island's northernmost tip, more than 400 metres (1,312 feet) over the Atlantic and offering extraordinary views out over the Chinijo Archipelago from its windows and outside terrace. A onetime artillery battery Manrique turned into a restaurant and cultural centre, the Mirador del Río's architecture is so avant-garde that it was used as the setting for a 1984 episode of Doctor Who. Landscaped glass domes, helicoid stairways, and undulating passageways are among the features characteristic of Manrique's style.
