Monument to the Peasant

A beloved César Manrique classic

Lanzarote is inextricably linked to its most famous artist/architect, César Manrique (1919-1992), and his 1968 Monumento al Campesino is one of his signature triumphs, a tribute to the early settlers who forged an agrarian society on the island's many lava fields. Located outside the inland town of San Bartolomé, close to the centre of Lanzarote, it's actually a complex made of a sculpture called Fecundity, made out of repurposed old ships' water tanks arranged on a rock base. Alongside is a museum created by Manrique to conserve implements and other artifacts of traditional Canarian farm workers; you'll also find various exhibitions and a gourmet restaurant of Canary Islands cuisine.
