If the national sentiment of Portugal is the saudade, a melancholy of sorts identified with the joy of being sad, Fado is the music that best conveys this feeling. Amalia Rodrigues, the biggest star in this genre, is still revered by the people of Lisbon, who remain thrilled with the beautiful memory of her crystal voice. Nowadays, although authentic figures of her stature rarely appear, many locals are devoted to these profoundly moving songs. The most interesting are in the popular neighbourhood of Alfama, although there is also quality in Barrio Alto or Mouraria. We recommend the traditional Casa de Linhares (Beco dos Armazéns do Linho, 2) or the cosy and genuine Cristal Fado (Travessa da Queimada, 9). Be advised that Lisbon prices, usually pretty affordable, go up significantly here. Even so, we invite you to enjoy the thrill of fado masters' moving art.
