California African American Museum

A continent with lots of history.

This interesting museum is another of the most representative examples of the mix of cultures that has given rise to what is now the United States of America. Located at 600 State Drive, its core mission is precisely that: to highlight the important role played by African-American communities in the formation of current American society. Its permanent collections include a myriad of pieces brought to this part of the world by African slaves, as well as numerous works of art in continuous rotation. As for the temporary exhibitions, they emphasise the importance of some of the most famous Americans of African origin in fields such as politics, science, the arts, music and sport. In its corridors, you can see references to such famous names as Martin Luther King, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson and the current US president, Barack Obama. The museum also has a broad annual programme of conferences, plays, music concerts and other shows. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm, and on Sundays, from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. See www.caamuseum.org for more information.
