Bordered by Olive Street, Fifth Street, Sixth Street and Hill Street, Pershing Square (www.laparks.org/pershingsquare) was built in the centre of Los Angeles in 1866 and has the honour of being the oldest park in the city. Regularly used for concerts and all kinds of shows, it takes its name from one of the American heroes of the First World War, General John J. Pershing. Amongst its main attractions are beautiful boardwalks, with open-air sculptures and a famous lavender tower. Nearby is the no less well-known Millennium Baltimore Hotel (www.millenniumhotels.com/millenniumbaltimorelosangeles), a Spanish-Italian neo-Renaissance palace opened in 1923, which has housed several celebrities. These include the US presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and more recently Bill Clinton. To visit it is to enter an exclusive world, with marble floors, gilded ceilings, works of art reminiscent of great European palaces and wood cladding. For years, this impressive place also hosted the Oscar award ceremonies.
