One of the city's best kept secrets, well off the tourist track several kilometres up the Saône River from city centre (easily reachable via bus), the Île Barbe is a petite natural oasis with a mediaeval feel, thanks to the ruins of a 5th-century abbey (considered to be the first of its kind in the region). Fun fact: in 1977 a flamboyant local author, Félix Benoît, declared the island an independent territory and named himself governor.
