Lyon was a key bulwark of the French resistance against the Nazis who occupied the country from 1940 to 1944, and the Centre d'Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation on Avénue Berthelot occupies the onetime Gestapo barrack, both with the aim of documenting that barbaric period and making visitors reflect on larger issues.
