The Chueca area, next to Malasaña, is made up of the streets located between calle Fuencarral and Gran Vía. Its epicentre is the colourful plaza de Chueca itself which is the gay heart of the city with its flags hung up on practically every building. It is renowned for having the best places to hang out in the city. Although it is difficult to demonstrate, the entire neighbourhood enjoys a great atmosphere day and night. There are countless places to grab a snack. A few metres from the plaza, on calle Augusto Figueroa, you will find the Mercado de San Marcos, a new space to eat in Madrid with a fair few eateries inside, each one having a speciality and, if the weather is on your side, you can eat on the terrace upstairs. Of course, 28 June is Gay Pride Day, a major party in the area. During this period, the streets are brightly decked out, the neighbours take to the streets and the music blasts out until the wee hours. If you're there, don't miss it!
