Plaza de España

Symbol of the city.

Marking its 100th anniversary in 2013, Plaza de España with its relatively short but eventful history is an icon of Melilla. King Alfonso XIII was given the symbolic task of knocking down the first stone of the old defensive wall to make way for this grand plaza, which was completed two years later. Nowadays, the Plaza de España is one of the best spots in town to take a break from the heat, thanks to its green zones and its huge trees, surrounding a central fountain which contains the Monument to the Heroes of the Morocco Campaigns. Here in the plaza you'll also find the city's public library and the old city hall, now the seat of the autonomous city assembly.
