The House of Glass

A "scandalous" glass façade.

This is the popular name for the building that was once home to the luxurious Queen Victoria Hotel built in 1927 by entrepreneur Ramón Gironella. It hosted the cream of local and visiting high society, was Melilla's first building to have a lift, and probably also the first with a glass front (originally a white glass, later changed to one of a more greenish hue). Yet despite its sumptuousness, the hotel was short-lived, closing its doors in 1935 most likely due to the Great Depression. A number of businesses have since come and gone here, but by the beginning of the last decade the premises had become so run down that the local government undertook a still-ongoing restoration in 2011.
