Melilla's September festivities to honour its patroness the Virgin of Victory make this a uniquely special time to visit. Not just because the fierce summer temperatures ease off a bit, but also because of the many activities during this month. The fair is like one you would see in Andalusia, with a multitude of stands, lively merriment and concerts. On September 8th a procession is held which parades the image of the virgin through throngs of locals throughout the city. At night, the party ramps up even more with musical performances at the official celebration stand, as well as parades of gigantes and cabezudos (giant papier-mâché figures). On the last day, firecrackers and fireworks wind the proceedings up with a bang.
