Jewellery shops and hats at the Portal de Mercaderes

Casa Tardán.

“De Sonora a Yucatán se usan sombreros Tardán” (From Sonora to Yucatán, everyone wears Tardán hats), claims the slogan of this ancient establishment, located in the Portal de Mercaderes (Merchant's Colonnade). "Casa Tardán", founded in 1847, is surrounded by the hustle and bustle of this colonnade, which has been a shopping area since as far back as 1532. This age-old hat shop started by importing hats from Europe and the United States, but eventually they managed to set up their own factory to provide hats, a product that during the Porfirio Diaz age was considered as being almost essential for well-to-do families. The shop shares the colonnade with dozens of jewellery shops, which seem to have found that this area is the best place to display and sell the typical Mexican silverware. Of these, the most noteworthy are the "Centro Joyero Zócalo" and the first shop in the Bizarro jewellery chain (16 de septiembre street), which nowadays has over 30 branches around the country.
