Mexico and España parks

Easily mistaken.

There's less than ten minutes' walk between one and the other, so when you talk to the locals, they tend to confuse them, or to think of them as one and the same. Placed between Colonia Roma and Colonia Condesa neighbourhoods, Parque España, designed by architect José Luis Cuevas, was created in 1921 on the former racecourse. It has big green areas and spaces for the children to play, and the neighbours go there in the hot summer afternoons to cool down and rest. In this park there is a monument to president Lázaro Cárdenas, presented by the Spanish Republic in exile, in appreciation of his support during the Spanish Civil War. A few years later, came the creation of Parque México (as everyone calls it, although its official name is Parque General San Martín), slightly bigger than the former one and with an extra attraction: it has a small, relaxing lake upon whose shore the Mexicans like to sit and read. Both are usually crowded during weekends and there is a bike rental service.
