Since the Middle Ages, Minorca's geographic Mediterranean location has made it a strategic prize sought after by countries including not just Spain but also Britain, France, and others. Fort Marlborough was built by the British near Sant Esteve Beach in the town of Es Castell to guard the island's east coast against attacks by their enemies. Named for General Churchill, aka the Duke of Marlborough, one of the most illustrious figures in modern British history, it's one of the island's most impressive military structures, effectively camouflaged by its sandy environment.
