As the world still remembers, Munich alongside its many delightful charms also bears the legacy of its role in one of humanity's greatest tragedies, the Holocaust. And a half hour north of Munich, you can still visit one of its most notorious names, Dachau, which started to house political prisoners on 22 March 1933, shortly after Adolf Hitler's rise to power, eventually housing 200,000 and killing 31,000 - not just politicals, but also Jews, homosexuals, and all the other populations persecuted by the Nazis. In addition to the restored facilities, visitable via guided tour, there is a museum and a memorial to the victims.
