Majorca is particularly well known within Spain for its baked goods, but these sugar-dusted sweet rolls enjoy special pride of place. No one knows exactly where, when or how ensaimadas originated, but there are records of them being baked as far back as the 17th century for special occasions, celebrations, and feasts. You can find various types and flavours, including custard, pumpkin, whipped cream, even savoury versions, including some stuffed with a distinctive local sausage called sobrassada. You'll find plenty of places to sample this treat, but one particularly well known spot is Horno Santo Cristo on Carrer Jacob Sureda.
