Shakespeare and Company

Alphabet soup

Books, books and more books (mostly second hand) is what you’ll find on both floors of this incredible bookshop; an absolute must for all bookworms. It also specialises in English-language literature. You’ll find it in the Latin Quarter in the fifth arrondissement, just around the corner from the Seine and the Notre Dame. The bookshop as it appears today was first opened in 1951 by George Whitman. During the mid-20th century, it became the epicentre of literary culture in the city, counting names such as Joyce, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein or Pound amongst its most distinguished customers. Many novelists and aspiring writers (for example from the beat generation) would sleep here in exchange for helping to run the shop.
