Mikhailovsky Theatre

As important as it is old.

This theatre was named after Mikhail Pavlovich, the son of Paul I of Russia, although it is also known as Maly Theatre. The current building was designed by the architect Alexander Brullov and built in Mikhailovsky Square, which is now known as Arts Square. The Mikhailovsky Theatre opened in 1833 and is one of the oldest opera and ballet theatres in Russia. It is a great place for a magical night out in Saint Petersburg. Go to www.mikhailovsky.ru/en/ for the current programme in English. The famous Spanish ballet dancer and choreographer Nacho Duato has directed the Mikhailovsky Theatre ballet company since January 2011 and has also been the director of the Berlin State Ballet since 2013.
