One of Costa Rica's most important writers, Joaquín García Monge (1881-1958) was also an artist and political activist, among other things, and furthermore also rose to direct the Ministry of Culture and the National Library. He was awarded the National Order of Merit shortly before his death. Inaugurated in 1989, the museum is located in a 19th-century adobe-and-reed manse on the edge of Desamparados Park and prominently features enormous neocolonial-style windows. On display inside are various paintings, photographs, documents and various other items, as well as a recreation of García Monge's office — desk, typewriter, letters, even handkerchiefs.
