The people-watching is superb and so is the sightseeing, with one of the country's key historic monuments and several of its most important sights right nearby.

Monument to Independence

A key monument to independence from Spain, in a key downtown hotspot.

Right in the heart of San Salvador, a few steps from the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Independence Monument dates from 1911 and presides over one of the area's busiest squares at almost any time of day, Plaza de la Libertad. At the centre of it all you'll find a detailed sculpture marking the centenary of independence from Spain, mounted on a pedestal 20 metres (66 feet) high. From there you can wander round the square or head over to the Church of the Candelaria, the cathedral, the Church of El Rosario, and the National Palace, just a few yards away.
