Salvadoran street food

Street stands are a great way to experience the capital.

One very typical way to enjoy this city is through its comida callejera or street food (from a cultural and tastiness as well as a convenience standpoint), and there are certain parts of town which are especially good for seeking this out. One of these is the busiest streets in the southwest of the city. If you find yourself walking through the Santa Tecla area around dusk, you should head toward Paseo del Carmen, especially if it happens to be a weekend. There you'll find small makeshift outdoor kitchens where you can taste homemade dishes at great prices. You'll find something similar during the day in the Zona Rosa, although in the form of take-away spots. Or you can have a seat at any street café to order a plate of beans, bread, and a cup of shuco, a fermented corn drink that's one of the most typical local libations.
