Along with La Concha and Ondarreta, the Playa de la Zurriola is one of San Sebastián's trio of city beaches, and the farthest away from downtown (nearly a kilometre/a half mile). It's also the most exposed to the rough surf of the open Cantabrian Sea, and thus was rarely visited - until the 1990s, when a breakwater that calmed things down enough for swimming was installed, yet kept the waves kicky enough for some serious surfing. So in these recent decades Zurriola has become quite the scene, including various major surfing competitions and other events such as the summertime Heineken Jazzaldia, one of the world's top jazz festivals.
