Mount Urgull

Amazing views, historic castle

This hill situated in the middle of San Sebastián is unsurprisingly one of the city's top icons, and has played an important part in its history and evolution. As far back as the 12th century, its strategic location and sweeping views out over the bay, ocean, and hinterland made it the perfect choice for a military bastion to protect the city from attacks by surrounding kingdoms and cities as well as from the sea. You can still visit the main such fortification, Mota Castle, which today is home to the Casa de la Historia, a museum covering the city's various historical periods. Following the footpath around the hill, at the north end you'll find the English Cemetery, resting place of the Duke of Wellington's soldiers fallen during a battle for the city during the 1813 Peninsular War.
