Situated right downtown, the Mercado de San Martín is one of San Sebastián's two main public markets (the other is Mercado de la Bretxa), with a great history and tradition behind it. Built in 1884, the original steel-and-glass edifice quickly became an icon of the Old Town, but eventually it fell into disuse and decrepitude and so was finally knocked down a few years ago. So what you see here now is a new construction, but wonderful in its own right, offering a beautiful selection of meats, fish, produce, and various local food specialities.
