Village of Zarautz

Surfing and history

Some 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of San Sebastián, this little old fishing village has earned a new incarnation as one of the northern Spanish coast's most important surfing towns thanks to its spectacular beach, exposed to the surf of the open Cantabrian Sea in all its gnarly glory (in fact it's so perfect for the sport that it's home to the International Surfing Championship). Apart from its aquatic awesomeness, Zarautz also offers an atmospheric trip back into the history of the Basque Country thanks to its old quarter, a mix of medieval structures like Santa María la Real church and later landmarks such as the 16th-century Renaissance Narros Palace. And while you're here, we'd also recommend heading up nearby Mt. Talaimendi for some spectacular views of the coast and the surrounding landscape, dotted with typical Basque country houses.
