Seafood is obviously a large part of a typical diet here in the city and in the rest of the region, and some of the most popular dishes in Cantabria are made with ingredients from the sea. Every day, vast amounts of fishermen moor their boats at in the Fishing District to sell their produce to the area’s restaurants. One of the most common phrases you will hear is “una de rabas” (a plate of rabas). These are what are known in other areas as ‘calamares’, or squid rings. However, they are prepared differently here, as they are battered and cooked with lemon juice. You can find this delicious dish in almost any area, but if you’re spoilt for choice, we recommend heading over to the Cabo Mayor Lighthouse, as there is a bar next door that has been in business for many years and offers a stunning terrace overlooking the sea. This is the perfect place to sit down, relax and order “una de rabas”.
