Santander is renowned for its key figures in the world of culture. From Jose Maria Cossio to the more recent Juan Carlos Calderon, this small town has been home to numerous illustrious figures throughout history. Perhaps the most important of these is Marcelino Menendez Pelayo. This Santander writer, historian and critic played a fundamental role in 19th century culture. Today, his residence is part of the house-museum and library that are open for visits. The library building with its enormous staircase and unusual decorative spheres and iron motifs, as well as Menendez Pelayo’s own home next door are both open to the public every day. Whilst enjoying a stroll through the gardens, you can imagine the author doing the same thing, reading and writing 19th century history in this very same place.
