One of the most illustrious figures of Cantabria is writer Jose Maria de Pereda. The writer, peer and intimate friend of Benito Perez Galdos, was one of the creators of the realism literary genre on the peninsula, which was one of the most important literary movements in Spanish literature. The Cantabrian would always greatly defend the region, which is why many of his works are set in his hometown of Polanco, close to Suances and Torrelavega. Here you will find his birthplace, a beautiful 18th century mountain home that was his residence and is now a house-museum dedicated to the writer himself. There is also an enormous 19th century house with beautiful gardens. This is where the writer would bring his friends, many of them important artists in Spanish 19th century culture, and would also write a large part of his works, such as the famous ‘Sotileza’.
