The Beachcombers

Power to the young.

These unusual beachcomber statues line the esplanade and watch over Pereda Promenade. These figures of children are one of the city’s most authentic icons. The name ‘beachcomber’ was given to children, whose legality was questionable and roamed the port, living off whatever the boats had left. The etymological meaning of the word ‘raquero’ (beachcomber) is actually thought to derive from the Spanish word for 'plunder,' when looters would target the most unaware vessels. Symbolically, next to these statues you will find the Real Club Maritimo de Santander, which is the headquarters of one of the most important navigation clubs in the world.
