The Liebana Valley is made up of four valleys that connect in the town of Potes. This valley is one of the most spectacular and important natural areas in the Cantabrian region. At the heart of this valley, you will find Santo Toribio de Liebana. This monastery is, along with Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Caravaca de la Cruz, one of the only places in the world that holds the remains of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Because of this, the Lebaniego Sacred Jubilee Year attracts pilgrims from all over the world and has actually been declared an Event of Exceptional Public Interest. When this celebration begins, the confessional is opened, which was once used for fishermen to redeem themselves. However, Pope Julius II sent out a message to say that any visitors to this monastery would have the opportunity to be pardoned for their sins. Hence, the seventy-third Jubilee Year will be celebrated here in 2017.
