Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken

A grandiose church with its very own 'hunchback of Notre Dame'

The grand Basilica Mare de Déu dels Desamparats (in Spanish, the Virgen de los Desamparados) holds the distinction of being Valencia's first Baroque building. Built between 1652 and 1667, it's located just steps away from the cathedral, and was built to honour Our Lady of the Forsaken, considered the patroness of all Valencians. A statue of the Virgin Mary is one of the treasures inside - fondly known to locals as la gerepudeta (hunchback) because she leans forward a bit - flanked by the patron saint of the Valencian Community, St. Vincent Ferrer, and of the city St. Vincent the Martyr. Another treasure in here is the early-18th-century frescoes of painter Antonio Palomino.
