Right smack in the centre of the historic centre, the city's most important square is the spot where Valencia started becoming Valencia. The Plaza de la Virgen is ringed by some of the Old Town's most iconic buildings, including the Cathedral of Santa María, the Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken, and the Palace of the Generalitat, the Valencia autonomous community's government. It's also the site of one of the key events of the annual Falles festival, the offering of flowers. Fun fact: in the cathedral's Portal of the Apostles, every Thursday at noon, Europe's oldest extant judicial institution - the Water Tribunal, dating back to 960 - still convenes to adjudicate and discuss issues primarily involving water distribution.
