Valencia's city hall was transferred in 1854 from the current Generalitat building to an 18th-century former school, the neoclassical Casa de Enseñanza; this structure was expanded in the first decades of the 20th century to include its current grandiose neo-Baroque façade. The splendour extends to its interior, as well, as evidenced in its marble staircase and main ballroom. Right out front lies the enormous Plaza del Ayuntamiento, City Hall Square, another important hub of Valencia's historic centre.
