Really, the Piazza di Spagna owes its popularity to the enormous staircase nearby. This stairway has become a pleasant heterogeneous meeting point for the people of Rome and tourists. It is a huge boat shaped fountain, which was commissioned by Pope Urban III, and built by Bernini in the XVII century. It is said that both the staircase and the fountain were erected so that the papacy could see a more monumental sophisticated Rome. During the day, it is the starting point for the shopping route. And at night is also an popular meeting point. Both the popular staircase and the square fills with university students, who meet there to start of on their nights out.
