More information from Milan
Milan is one of the world’s fashion capitals and is home to the Scala Theatre, one of the most renowned opera theatres in the world. Take one of our cheap flights to Milan and discover an impressive city with a wealth of attractions and culture, easily covered on foot, due to its size.
Its trademark Duomo, a magnificent Gothic 14th century cathedral, is at the heart of it all. Its upper part boasts a terrace that allows visitors to walk through its dramatic towers and pinnacles topped with statues, which play a vital role in the city’s beautiful skyline. Luchino Visconti’s famous film ‘Rocco and His Brothers’ (1960) and the more recent ‘Io Sono L’amore’ (2009) are a testimony to this beautiful journey through the summits of this impressive building. On the same square as the Duomo, you will find the Royal Palace, which serves as a cultural centre and houses the city’s best temporary exhibitions, and the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery, a spectacular 19th century shopping gallery, comprising two perpendicular arcades with glass roofs. In addition to the most exclusive boutiques, the gallery is home to delightful restaurants, including some of the city’s oldest establishments, such as the historic Café Biffi. Another must-see is Sforzesco castle, a 14th century fortress which houses museums such as the Museum of Ancient Art, the Pinacoteca and the Egyptian Museum. However, the city’s most famous work of art, Leonardo Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’, is to be found in the Santa María delle Grazie Church. Other places of interest include Mercanti Square, one of the city’s most beautiful squares and home to important Medieval buildings, and the 4th century San Lorenzo Maggiore Church, the oldest in Milan.
Once you have soaked up your fair share of monuments, head to Lake Como for a breath of fresh air. This stunning oasis just outside of Milan is the third largest lake in Italy, and is surrounded by picturesque little villages, including Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo.
