San Pedro de la Roca Castle (Santiago, Cuba)

Or Morro of Santiago de Cuba.

Located at the extreme eastern end of the island, this enormous castle also known as the Morro of Santiago de Cuba, on the southern coast of the island, guarded marine access to the city, which was the island’s capital in the years between 1515 and 1607. Atop of its massive walls you'll find cannons that were used to safeguard the island from pirate invasions and attacks from other European powers. This enormous complex forms one of the main military complexes in the Caribbean, along with the Socapa, the Avanzada and the Estrella. Built during the Renaissance period in Europe, it has remained one of the most architecturally significant military enclaves in history, and also one of the most picturesque corners of the island. If you’re going to visit, we recommend that you stay to watch the sun set in the Caribbean Sea over its ramparts.
