Turquino National Park (Granma)

Heading South.

The Turquino National Park is located on the southeastern side of the island, in the heart of the Sierra Maestra mountains. Here the island's highest point, the Pico Real de Turquino rises 6500 feet above sea level. It's true that it's not an excessive altitude, but the silver lining here is that you can hike it by foot for a visit that is both historically and environmentally significant. Its ecosystem houses many species of animals and plants endemic to the Caribbean island, such as a type of pine tree that can only be found in this part of Cuba. A rich variety of Caribbean fauna can be found throughout the park. For nature lovers, it's a fascinating visit. For history buffs, the Sierra Maestra is considered the cradle of the Cuban Revolution, and as you travel around these parts you will find many historical references.
