Bullfighting in Jaén

The heartland of bullfighting

Spain's bullfighting tradition takes on extra importance in Jaén, given that this province is home to the country's most important bull ranches. The La Alameda bull ring, which passed its 50-year mark in 2012, gets festooned every October for the San Lucas Fair, marking the end of the annual bullfighting season, with many of the pursuit's major figures in attendance. But perhaps even more reknowned is the bullring of the nearby town of Linares, where in 1947 one of the greatest toreros in history, Manolete, died after being gored. A monument at the entrance to the ring commemorates that event, and every year on August 28 flowers are placed before it.
