Santo Domingo Convent and Church

Another gem in the centre of Jaén

The Royal Convent of Santo Domingo (St. Dominic), founded by King Juan I in 1382, is an imposing landmark right in the centre of Jaén. Highlights include a jewel of a 17th-century courtyard, thought to be the work of Eufrasio López de Rojas, who was also responsible for the facade of the city's cathedral. Here you'll find various semi-circular arches supporting the upper floor, with alternating windows and balconies above each arch. Alongside the convent, the church is the 16th-century work of architect Alonso Barba, and boasts what's considered the best cloister in a city full of cloisters. Today the convent houses the Jaén Provincial Historical Archive.
